Best 10 Day Split
A strong Thailand first trip is three nights in Bangkok, three nights in Phuket, and three nights in Chiang Mai, leaving one travel buffer night where flights work best. Bangkok gives temples, food, river transport, malls, and markets. Phuket gives beaches, island tours, viewpoints, and resort time. Chiang Mai gives a calmer northern finish with temples, night markets, cooking classes, and mountain trips.
Start in Bangkok
Bangkok is intense but rewarding. Use the river for Wat Pho, Wat Arun, the Grand Palace area, and old-city sightseeing. Use the BTS or MRT for malls, newer districts, and evening plans. Forum travelers often warn that Bangkok traffic can swallow a day, so group sights by area instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Choose Phuket Carefully
Phuket changes depending on your beach base. Patong is nightlife-heavy, Kata and Karon work for many first timers, Rawai feels quieter, and Bang Tao or Mai Khao can suit resort travelers. If boat tours matter, keep one backup day because weather and sea conditions can change plans.
Slow Down in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is best when it is not treated as a checklist. Stay near the old city or Nimman depending on your style. Mix temples, food, markets, and one day outside town. Avoid booking too many animal or adventure activities without checking ethics, travel time, and weather.
